What Is Memory?

Is memory something personal? Does memory hold emotional meaning for the person who remembers? A smell, a sound, an image, a taste - can these awaken memories within us? And how is a memorial candle connected to Holocaust remembrance? By exploring memorial candles and the different ways candles are used in public spaces, we learn how a memorial candle helps us remember someone who perished in the Holocaust, both in private and public settings, and within our shared social and national memory.
